Photograph by Thomas Sewell The award-winning poet and conservationist W.S. Merwin died in his sleep on Friday, March 15, 2019 at his home in Hawaii. He was 91. Merwin’s many honors included the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, the National Book Award for Poetry, and being named the US poet laureate. The executive director of the nonprofit Merwin Conservancy, Sonnet Coggins, told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that he died peacefully in his sleep. “That was what he wanted, to be in his home,” she said.
